About the Data Viz Awards

CERA is excited to announce TWO opportunities to participate in the Data Visualization contest at the annual conference.

 

Data Viz Poster Contest

Participants bring a data visualization on a poster no bigger than 20” x 30”. Participants should use visualizations to tell a compelling story about why the data matters. Two winners will be selected - peoples choice and board choice, which is based on a scoring rubric.

Data Viz-a-Palooza

​​All participants receive the same data set and are tasked with analyzing the data and creating a visualization that tells a meaningful story. Submissions are digital files and must be received by October 1. Use this form to sign up for the Viz-a-Palooza.

About the Data Viz Poster Contest

Posters should tell a story about why the data matters, answering the crucial question, “So What?”  Participants will vote for their favorite poster, and board members will score posters using a rubric that includes a rating on the effectiveness of storytelling.

Data Viz Poster FAQs

​

What types of visualizations are allowed?

Participants may use any tool to create their visualizations, and the data used must be education-related. This is an opportunity for participants to present key research findings or practices from their daily work in a visually exciting presentation. Posters may not include participant's personal information (i.e., name, organization). 
 

What size are the posters?

Posters should be no larger than 20” x 30.” Posters may be portrait or landscape. Participants are responsible for printing their visualizations; CERA provides no printing services. Posters may be on one large piece of paper or more than one smaller piece assembled on-site.  

 

How are posters displayed?

A CERA Board Member will attach posters and a randomly assigned number to foam boards using binder clips. The foam boards will be displayed on easels in the vendor hall throughout the conference.  

 

Where should participants bring their posters? 

Participants should bring their posters to the registration table when they arrive.  

 

What awards are available?

There are two awards: People’s Choice and Board Selection.  Winners of both awards will be announced during the closing session on the third day of the conference.  

 

When does voting take place?

Voting for the CERA People’s Choice Award takes place during Snacks with Vendors on the second day of the conference. 

 

Can participants stand by their posters?

Participants are welcome to stand by their poster during the People’s Choice Data Viz voting session on day 2, if they would like, but it is not a requirement.

 

How are winners selected?

Conference attendees will vote for their favorite data poster.  Each attendee can cast one vote.

Style - Is the data presented in a visually interesting way?

  • 3 points | Poster uses color, chart types, and other components in a very interesting way

  • 2 Points | Poster uses color, chart types, and other components in an interesting way

  • 1 Point | Poster uses color, chart types, and other components in a not very interesting way

 

Storytelling - Does the poster have a clear story?

  • 3 points | Poster tells a very clear story 

  • 2 Points | Poster tells a somewhat clear story

  • 1 Point | Poster does not tell a clear story

So What? - Does the poster show why the data matters?

  • 3 points | Poster clearly connects the data to why the content matters.

  • 2 Points | Poster somewhat connects the data to why the content matters.

About the Data Viz-a-Palooza Contest

Data Viz-a-Palooza FAQs

What types of visualizations are allowed?

Participants should submit one data visualization that helps an audience of educational partners identify a problem of practice within the data set. Participants may use any tool to create their visualizations.

 

What file formats are accepted?  

Accepted formats: .pdf, .png or .jpg files will be accepted. Data visualizations will be projected at the conference. Submissions should be in the 16:9 size ratio, landscape so that they project nicely.  

 

How do participants submit their data visualizations for the Data Viz-a-Palooza?

Participants will submit their visualizations as a digital flat file to registration@caedresearch.org by the deadline given in the emails.

 

How are winners selected? 

CERA Board members will score data submissions on a rubric, and winners will be selected and notified around mid-October.

 

How can conference participants view all Data Viz-a-Palooza submissions?

All Data Viz-a-Palooza submissions will revolve on a digital display at the conference.
